> Anthropic says Claude generated 35,000 antibody designs in a month for Divergence Labs. Early lab tests found three that dislodge IgE better than Xolair.

Anthropic said on October 27 that Claude, "largely autonomously," generated roughly 35,000 antibody designs in about a month for a food allergy program with Divergence Labs. The designs were meant to be narrowed down and tested.

The target is IgE. Omalizumab (Xolair), the only FDA-approved biologic for food allergy, neutralizes circulating IgE but does not effectively clear it from the FcεRI receptor on immune cells. Divergence is designing a two-armed drug: one arm binds IgE, the other dislodges it.

Here is the funnel. Of 91 experimentally characterized disruptor designs, 20 showed activity against receptor-bound IgE, according to Divergence's preprint. Three of those removed more IgE than omalizumab in a dose-titration assay. Anthropic's post adds that three designs bound IgE.

Context: this is one of six partnerships Anthropic describes. Anthropic says the work is mostly preclinical and has not been tested in humans, and the figures come from the company and its partners, not independent review.

My take: 35,000 is the headline, but 91 to 20 to 3 is the result. Three assay wins over Xolair make a promising bench result. Divergence’s next step is to combine the two arms into one molecule; these results compare the separate components, not a finished drug.
