> Anthropic donates the Agent Skills standard to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation after 70+ platforms adopted it, with 1 million skills published.

Anthropic is donating the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation, the company announced today. The gift includes the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain.

The numbers, per Anthropic: it published the standard in December 2025, and more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, have integrated it since. So far, 1 million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed.

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a task or domain, plus any scripts or reference material it needs. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers. The proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills. The announcement gives no timeline for those releases.

Context: Agent Skills is one of four new AAIF projects announced at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose, alongside OpenAI's Open Responses, Hugging Face's OpenEnv and Alibaba's OpenSandbox. That brings AAIF to 10 hosted projects, up from three at its December 2025 launch.

My take: a folder and a markdown file is a standard you can actually install today. The security guidance is the part to watch. Nearly 280 million installs of instructions that agents follow is a lot of trust, and the guidance is still a proposal.
