> Google is rolling out opt-in Enhanced protection in Android's Messages, plus screen-sharing and call-forwarding safeguards. Here is what ships and when.

Google is adding scam defenses to Android. The headline item is Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages, an opt-in setting rolling out in the coming weeks, according to Google.

With it on, cloud Gemini models analyze complex conversations with unknown senders inside Private AI Compute, which Google says keeps the data inaccessible even to Google. On-device Gemini Nano checks unfamiliar links against real-time web signals before you tap, on Pixel 10+, the Galaxy S26 series and other select devices, Engadget reported.

The rest:

- Scam Detection in chat notifications, launched on Pixel, reaches hundreds of millions more users later this year via Honor, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, vivo, Xiaomi and others.
- Screen-sharing privacy, which blanks login fields and payment screens, extends to Chrome and Android WebView. Engadget reported Android 15 and newer get it later in October 2026.
- Call forwarding protection lands in early December 2026 on Pixel and select devices, per Engadget. Android blocks apps from quietly enabling forwarding and warns before a typed MMI code takes effect.

Numbers, according to Google: Scam Detection flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month, and verified bank calls have blocked more than 3 million spoofed calls from Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco since June.

Context: a Google-commissioned YouGov survey of 4,500 smartphone users across the U.S., Canada and Australia found 40% were "very" or "extremely" concerned about mobile fraud.

My take: the useful part is the plumbing, no silent call forwarding, no exposed payment screens. The catch is that the best protection is opt-in.
