American Express has a developer kit for AI agents that shop, and a promise to eat some of their mistakes. The Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) Developer Kit gives developers access to five services: agent registration, account enablement, intent intelligence, payment credentials and cart context, according to the release.

The promise is Amex Agent Purchase Protection. In the future, the company says, it will protect eligible customers from charges related to AI agent error if the card member authorized the agent and the agent sends Amex the customer's authenticated purchase intent. Luke Gebb, the company's global head of innovation, told American Banker: "We're standing behind the agents."

The press release is dated April 14, according to PYMNTS and Business Wire. TechCrunch covered the framework on October 13.

The numbers are thin. Amex says it has completed "thousands" of agentic payments in tests with AI platform partners. The cited reporting does not identify which platforms have the kit, when the protection goes live, or what counts as an agent error or an eligible customer.

The field is crowded. Google released its Agent Payments Protocol in September, with Amex among the contributors. Stripe and OpenAI launched the Agentic Commerce Protocol in October. Celent's Alenka Grealish pointed to OpenAI scaling back embedded checkout in ChatGPT as a sign that trust deficits are tempering ambitions.

My take: the kit is the easy part. The protection is the product, and today it is written in future tense. Publish the terms, then we talk.
