> Lenders and chip CEOs warn that capital could constrain AI buildout. Firmus pulled a $5 billion IPO and an Oracle-linked $38 billion loan is nearly placed.

The AI boom's next bottleneck may be money, and the people who hold it are starting to say so.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan told the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore on Monday that "[what] I think might be the biggest constraint is capital." Intel's Lip-Bu Tan pointed to the rising cost of capital and to unresolved questions about returns. The DBS CEO put it this way, per Semafor: "There’s shortages in chips. There’s shortages in power. And soon, there will be shortages of capital."

The numbers, according to FinancialMarkets.com: Nvidia-backed data-center operator Firmus shelved a planned $5 billion IPO in Australia last week, citing market conditions. A $38 billion construction loan for Oracle-leased data centers in Texas and Wisconsin has less than $1 billion left to place, and some lenders have sold pieces to nonbank buyers at a discount. SoftBank paid as much as 9.75% on $4.5 billion of notes. JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking and MUFG are reportedly exploring significant risk transfers as they near internal limits on AI exposure.

The market is split. Some call tighter terms healthy discipline that weeds out weak projects. Others see structural strain that will delay builds. Meanwhile, Semafor says OpenAI will have no trouble raising the $30 billion it wants, and Anthropic is preparing a $1 trillion-plus IPO.

My take: the crown jewels still get their champagne. Some borrowers get champagne; others get a harder term sheet, and darling, that is a very glamorous way to sort winners.
